CT Tigers Snap Skid with First Walkoff Win
June 28, 2018 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, Ct. - Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, the Connecticut Tigers (3-10) pounced on two errors by the Staten Island Yankees (4-9) and scored two runs to snap a franchise-record, 10-game losing streak with their first walkoff win of the year, 4-3, at Dodd Stadium on Thursday night.
Cam Warner led off the ninth with a double to the wall in right field and moved to third on a groundout. With two outs, the 24-year-old Australian scored the game-tying run on an Ulrich Bojarski groundball that forced a throwing error from Staten Island third baseman Danienger Perez.
With the game tied 3-3, Bojarski stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch by Garrett Mundell (Loss, 1-2). Luke Sherley stepped to the plate in just his second game with the Tigers and sent another tricky grounder to Perez, who misplayed it off his glove as Bojarski raced home to score the game-winning run for Connecticut's first victory since a 10-3 decision against the Lowell Spinners in Norwich on June 16.
Warner led the Tigers during a 3-for-4 night at the plate with two doubles including a base hit in the sixth that scored Isrrael De La Cruz to make it 2-2. Sherley scored Connecticut's first run of the game on a third-inning RBI groundout by second baseman Alexis Garcia in his 2018 debut with the Tigers.
Staten Island took a 3-2 lead with two outs in the top of the ninth. Designated hitter Junior Soto drove an RBI double to center that scored pinch runner Ricardo Ferreira from second. Drew Crosby (Win, 1-0) gave up the go-ahead run but improved Connecticut's bullpen record to 1-4 following the ninth-inning heroics.
Dylan Stock pitched two perfect innings of relief for the Tigers after starter Jose Vasquez matched his career high with seven strikeouts in five innings. Vasquez allowed two earned runs including a two-out, flyball to left field that got lost in a dense fog hovering over Dodd Stadium in the first inning and allowed Alex Junior to score from third for a 1-0 Staten Island lead.
First pitch was delayed by one hour and 29 minutes following rainstorms throughout Thursday afternoon. The Tigers earned their first victory this season when trailing at any point in the ballgame and also grabbed their first win while wearing Norwich Navigators uniforms on Throwback Thursday.
The series continues Friday with First Responders Night presented by Backus & Windham Hospitals. All current or retired police, firefighters, and EMTs can purchase a reserved seat and food voucher redeemable for a hot dog, bag of chips, and bottled non-alcoholic beverage ($14 value) for just $7. Friday Night Fireworks and the Postgame Party at Hole In The Wall Bar on the first-base concourse will immediately follow the Tigers-Yankees game.
