Science of Baseball Declared a Tie

The Great Lakes Loons and Dow Corning hosted the first Science of Baseball competition Tuesday at Dow Diamond. Twelve teams of four high school students submitted written papers and made presentations about scientific aspects of the game of baseball in hopes of winning the grand prize of a $1,000 scholarship per student, plus a $1,000 donation to the winning students' school.

After the votes were tabulated, the entries from both Midland High School and Bay City Western High School finished in a tie, and Dow Corning announced it would double the prize package to accommodate both winning teams. All eight winning students won scholarships of $1,000 each, and both winning schools were awarded $1,000 donations from Dow Corning.

"All 12 teams submitted excellent projects, but in the end two teams stood out as top entries," said Loons' President and General Manager Paul Barbeau. "The fact that Dow Corning doubled the donation was a very generous gesture on their part."

Midland High's entry was entitled, "Amazing Wave How Sweet the Spot," which analyzed the "sweet spot" of a baseball bat. The team from Bay City Western High presented "A Study on Wood Densities and Their Effect on Rebound of a Baseball After Contact."

The written portion of the contest was submitted in advance and the presentations took place Tuesday afternoon from 3-6pm at the Dow Diamond concourse. The winners were announced during the rain delay at the ballpark.
