Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Swing of the Quad Cities right-hander P.J. Waters was named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for the period lasting from May 7-13, becoming the second Swing player to receive a weekly award from the league this season.

Walters picked up road wins against both Lansing and Burlington last week, going 2-0 with eight strikeouts and no walks over nine scoreless innings of work. The University of South Alabama product is 3-1 with a 2.87 ERA through nine outings (six starts) this year, boasting a 36-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 37.2 innings pitched.

The 22-year-old from Daphne, Alabama, has been especially effective over his last five outings. Pounding the strike zone consistently and utilizing a devastating changeup, Walters is 3-0 with one save and a 0.78 ERA since April 24, adding 24 strikeouts against just two walks over 23 innings of work.

Walters joins fellow right-handed starter Elvis Hernandez as 2007 Swing players to be recognized by the Midwest League. Hernandez, a 22-year-old from the Dominican Republic, was the first Midwest League Pitcher of the Week this season after opening the year with two wins, 11 strikeouts, and just one hit allowed over his first eight innings.
