The Dayton Dragons (17-18) had been held to a single run in each of it's last two games, both losses. Dayton found some offense it the opening game of the four game series with the Clinton Lumber Kings (13-19) hitting two homers and picking up six extra base hits on route to a 8-4 opening game win on Friday night at Alliant Energy Field.
The Lumber Kings played long ball as well, clubbing three homers on the night. The first came in the bottom of the second inning with a Pedro Quero bomb off Dayton starter Juan Frias (W, 3-2) his fifth game the Lumber Kings a 1-0 lead.
The Dragons answered off Clinton starter Gerald Smiley (L, 0-1) in the top half of the third with a three spot. Domonique Lewis double home Luis Bolivar who led the inning off with a single to tie the game at 1-1. Kevin Howard's RBI single plated Lewis with the second run of the game and gave the Dragons a run the team would never relinquish at 2-1. Mark Schramek began a career best night for RBI by picking up his first on a double to make the score 3-1 Dayton.
The Dragons kept things rolling in the top of the third off Lumber King reliever Sixto Urena. Bolivar cracked a one out solo HR to extend the lead to 4-1. With two down the Dragons loaded the bases on singles by Junior Ruiz and Howard and a walk to Ryan Hanigan. Schramek crushed a 1-0 Urena offering over the wall in right field for his first HR as a professional. The grand slam capped a five RBI night for the Dragons third baseman and gave Dayton an 8-1 lead.
