West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
The West Michigan Whitecaps began their longest road trip of the season on Friday on the downside. The Whitecaps, who had won their previous two games at home, saw the Cedar Rapids Kernels rally for four runs in the sixth inning as the Kernels posted a 5-2 win over the 'Caps in Iowa. The game was the first of four games against the Kernels and the first of twelve straight on the road for West Michigan.
After each team scored a run in the first, the 'Caps took a 2-1 lead in the second on Mike Rabelo's run scoring single. The 2-1 lead held up until the Kernels had six straight batters reach base in the sixth, scoring four times to take the lead for good.
Juan Gonzalez had two hits and two stolen bases to pace the 'Caps offense.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 6:00 (Michigan time). Joel Zumaya, who leads all of the minor leagues with 56 strikeouts, will start on the mound for the 'Caps.
