Kane County Cougars News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - In a place where magic is the theme, the Cougars (25-10) put together a magical fourth inning, scoring four runs on four hits to beat the Fort Wayne Wizards (20-14), 4-3. Shane Komine (5-0) earned his team leading fifth win of the season, and is now tied for second in the Midwest League in victories. (Jon Connolly, West Michigan) Komine worked 6.2 innings allowing eight hits, three runs (two earned), no walks, and fanned seven. David Pauley (3-3) allowed all four runs in six innings pitched, to suffer the loss for Fort Wayne. Jared Burton retired all five batters he faced out of the bullpen, and Jeff Muessig closed the door with a scoreless ninth, to earn his league leading - 8th save of the season.
The Cougars used the home run ball to erase a 1-0 deficit in the fourth. Kory Wayment led off the frame by nailing his third home run of the year. Nelson Cruz blasted his league leading, 10th home run, with runners at first and second, to put the Cougars in front 4-1.
Fort Wayne received the long ball in the sixth inning with Josh Tranum hitting a two out solo home run. The home run was the second of the year for Tranum and the first allowed by Komine in 44.2 innings pitched.
The Wizards pulled within one run in the seventh inning and knocked out Komine in the process. Andres Pagan began the inning with a single and stole second base. With one out, Brian Burgamy doubled home Pagan, bringing Burton out of the bullpen, who retired the final two batters to preserve the lead.
Fort Wayne took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, scoring an unearned run off Komine. John McCurdy's throwing error with two outs allowed Steve Shirley to score from third base.
Tonight's game featured a 31-minute rain delay that occurred after the Wizards batted in the seventh inning.
