
Schmitt Lifts Cards In 11th Inning

New Jersey Cardinals News Release
This evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) defeated the Brooklyn Cyclones (New York Mets) 8-7 in 11 innings. New Jersey improves to 27-38 as the Cyclones drop to 41-23. Dave Williamson (1-5) picked up the win for the Cardinals as Robert Paulk (1-1) took the loss for the Cyclones. Williamson pitched one perfect inning to pick up his first win of the season.
The Cardinals scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. In the 2nd inning, Kevin Estrada reached on an error and was later knocked in by Casey Grimms sacrifice fly to give the Cardinals a 6-0 advantage. The Cyclones tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the 9th inning on a sacrifice fly by Brett Harper. Jose Virgil led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a single for the Cardinals. Casey Grimm then walked and Melvin Falu followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Virgil to third and Grimm to second. Billy Schmitt then drove a ball over the head of Brooklyn centerfielder Jon Slack to score Virgil and give the Cardinals a 8-7 win.
Billy Schmitt was 3-6 on the night with 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Jose Virgil went 2-5 with 2 RBI's for the Cardinals. Kevin Estrada scored 3 runs on the night for New Jersey along with a stolen base. Casey Grimm and Daylon Monette each had 2 RBI's for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals travel to Brooklyn tomorrow to take on the Cyclones. New Jersey faces the Cyclones again on Tuesday in Brooklyn. They return home on Wednesday to take on the Aberdeen Ironbirds at 7:15 p.m.
