New Jersey Cardinals News Release

Two former New Jersey Cardinals, pitcher Justin Pope and pitcher Ben Julianel, left the St. Louis Cardinalssystem. On the 22nd of August, the Cardinals acquired pitcher Sterling Hitchcock from the New York Yankees in the hopes of making the National League playoffs. Pope and Julianel went to the Yankees to complete the deal.

Both players began their careers in New Jersey after being drafted by St. Louis in the 2001 draft. Justin Pope was selected in the 1st round (28th overall) and Ben Julianel was chosen in the 12th round. Pope started 15 games to post a 2-4 record in 2001. His earned run average was a formidable 2.60, 2nd best single season ERA in NJC history, in 69.1 innings pitched. Julianel started all 15 of his games pitched for New Jersey. His 6-6 record accompanied a 3.48 ERA in 85.1 innings, 3rd all-time. Julianel struck out 86 batters in 2001, which is second only to the 94 punched out by Adam West in 1996. Julianel factored into 12 decisions, which ties him for 1st all-time. The 6 wins in one season ties him for 3rd in the Cardinals record book.

Justin Pope pitched this entire year for the Palm Beach Cardinals (High A) of the Florida State League. Pope was born in West Palm Beach and has lived the majority of his life in the Sunshine State. In 18 games started and 2 games in relief, Pope compiled a 4-11 record and a 4.92 ERA for Palm Beach. He will remain in the Florida State League, now with the Tampa Yankees.

Ben Julianel threw for the Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League (Low A). He pitched in 51 games recording 9 saves. With a 1.05 earned run average, Julianel was 4-2. His new team is the Battle Creek Yankees, also in the Midwest League. Julianel tossed one inning in relief for the Yankees on August 23rd to climb to 52 appearances, tying him for 2nd in the MWL.

New Jersey has a solitary home game to begin the week. This evening, at 5 PM, the Cardinals welcome the Brooklyn Cyclones, an affiliate of the New York Mets. The promotion tonight is a unique Bobblehead giveaway, featuring Chad Hutchinson courtesy of Ronetco ShopRite. Hutchinson played baseball for the New Jersey Cardinals but now plays football for the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL.
