Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

TROY, NY --- The Expos offense picked right up where it left off on the last roadtrip as Vermont scored just one run for the four straight game on the road as they opened a three-game series at Tri-City with a 2-1, 12-inning loss to the ValleyCats in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening.

Both runs scored by Tri-City were unearned, including the winning run in the bottom of the 12th on a RBI single from Randy McGarvey off Brett Reid to score Scott Robinson, who had led off the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error by shortstop Ja'Mar Clanton.

It was the second straight extra-inning game for the Expos and the third time in the last eight games after no "free baseball" in their first 57 games.

The ValleyCats had taken a 1-0 lead in the sixth inningon a sacrifice fly that followed an error by second baseman Larry Wayne York that allowed Kerry Fair to move from first to third base. That would be the only run allowed by Expos starter Devin Perrin, who gave up four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in six innings.

The Expos quickly tied the game 1-1 in the top of the seventh inning as Lorvin Louisa walked, moved to second on a sacrifice and then with two outs scored on a RBI double by Jason Tuttle.

Vermont loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth on a single and two walks, but Louisa struckout to end the threat. The Expos did not have another good scroing chance as they were they had just two walks and a single over the last four innings with a caught stealing and a double play wiping out two of the runners.

Jeremy Plexico came on to relieve Perrin in the seventh inning and gave up just two hits with four strikeouts over four innings. Reid (0-2) allowed four hits and struckout two over the last 1.1 innings to take the loss. The three Expos pitchers combined for just one walk and 13 strikeouts over the 12 innings.

Five ValleyCat pitchers combined to give up just six hits with seven walks and 12 strikeouts. That included former Rice Memorial High School and University of Vermont pitcher Jamie Merchant, who allowed a one-out single to Kory Casto before getting Brad Ditter to hit into a double play to end his one inning of work.

Adam Seuss went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Tri-City (38-28), which entered the game just 2.5 games behind the Oneonta Tigers for first-place in the Stedler Division.

Vermont, which just finished scoring 14 runs in winning two of three from Aberdeen at Centennial Field, scored one run in each of the last three games of their seven-game roadtrip last week and have now scored more than three runs in 32 away games just five times this season. It was also the 14th time this season that the Expos have been held to one run in a game, including 10 times on the road as Vermont (16-49) fell to 4-28 in away games.

The Expos and ValleyCats play game two of the three-game series on Monday night at Tri-City. The teams play the final game on Tuesday before Vermont returns home for a two-game series with the Lowell Spinners on Wednesday and Thursday.
