New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
PORTLAND, Maine - In a game the Fisher Cats led throughout, it came down to two key situations late in the game to decide their Monday night contest with the Portland Sea Dogs (24-18). Joel Carreno stranded the bases loaded in the eighth before Ryan Schimpf blasted his second homer of the game in the ninth to deliver the Fisher Cats to a 7-3 win.
The late-inning drama started with the Fisher Cats leading 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Relief pitcher Evan Crawford loaded the bases with only one out to force the Fisher Cats to go to the bullpen for Carreno, who picked up a four-out save on Sunday afternoon in New Britain.
With the sacks full, Carreno's extra workload didn't bother him. He struck out the final two men of the inning throwing nine straight breaking balls. The K's preserved the 4-3 lead to set up Schimpf in the ninth.
Coming into the game, the Fisher Cats third baseman was slumping, going 0-10 since a home run against Portland last Thursday. He snapped that streak with a two-run homer in the first before sealing the deal with a three-run shot, crushed to right field, in the top of the ninth. He became the first Fisher Cat to hit two homers in a game this year, the first since Miguel Bautista hit two in a rehab appearance last August.
Marcus Walden (3-4) was the winner on Monday, the day he learned he was the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week. He wasn't as good as he was last week against Portland when he tossed 7.2 shutout innings, but he gave up just two earned on Monday to earn his third win.
The Fisher Cats (23-22) are above .500 for the first time since April 14. They will now continue the series with Portland with game two on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. Right-hander Deck McGuire (2-3, 4.60) gets the ball for New Hampshire against Portland righty Brandon Workman (5-1, 3.66). Radio coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. with Tom Gauthier on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
New Hampshire returns home to play New Britain on Friday night May 24 at 7:05pm. An Atlas Fireworks Show will follow the game and fans can buy one ticket, get one free, courtesy of ENH Power. For tickets and information, visit www.nhfishercats.com.
