Schifsky Shorty Sparks Celebration

February 4, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Garrett Schifsky found the right moment to record a rare Waterloo Black Hawks shorthanded goal, helping to lift his team to a 4-2 win against the Fargo Force at Young Arena Friday.

Entering the game, Waterloo had one shorthanded goal in 2021/22, the lowest total in the United States Hockey League. Schifsky had been responsible for that earlier tally back in late October. Leading 2-1 in the third period, and with the Force on a power play, Patrick Geary made the second "shorty" possible. Geary navigated the width of the neutral zone before turning up ice on right wing, and flipping the puck to Schifsky, who banged it in at 6:28.

That goal proved crucial, because at 13:42, Fargo would celebrate the outcome of a terrible bounce against the Hawks. Skating in transition, Tyler Rollwagen wound up for a full slap shot, which goalie Jack Williams kicked aside with his left pad. Unfortunately, the puck caromed off a backchecking defender in the opposite circle; with Williams outside the crease to challenge Rollwagen's initial shot, he had no chance to deny the friendly-fire goal when the disk bounced back between the pipes.

Schifsky's goal kept the home team the rest of the way.

The 27th different Waterloo skater to record a goal this season had given the Hawks their initial lead. Daniel Sambuco arrived on Wednesday after a trade; the former Madison Capitol didn't wait long to make an impression. Just 4:56 into the action, he darted around a Fargo defender near the blue line, speeding to the front of the net to beat Louden Hogg with a low shot to the stick side.

Fargo's best chance of the first period came with 16.3 seconds left until intermission and just a moment after a Force power play had ended. Williams slid to his left to glove an opportunity from the right circle by German Yavash.

Waterloo then struck for a power play goal at 6:31 of the second. It was a broken play, but Owen Baker made it work from below the left circle. When the puck found him there, he let go of a quick chance that surprised Hogg.

Later in the period, the Force's second power play of the game resulted in another quality chance just after Waterloo came to full strength, and this time the visitors capitalized. At 17:15, a failed clearing attempt created Thomas Weis' opportunity to push in the opportunity from close range.

Waterloo closed out the win on an unassisted empty net goal from Adam Cardona with 1:16 remaining in the third period. Williams made 20 saves to earn his fourth head-to-head victory in this season's series against Fargo.

Saturday is an instant rematch between the teams as A Weekend with the Black Hawks, Sponsored by John Deere continues. After the 6:05 p.m. Saturday tilt, Waterloo's John Deere-inspired jerseys will be auctioned to benefit the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
