Chicago Steel News Release

GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The Chicago Steel today announced two separate trades, acquiring defenseman Cal Thomas from the Sioux Falls Stampede and defenseman Hunter McDonald from the Omaha Lancers.

"Cal and Hunter bring unique elements that will complement and enhance our team as a whole," said Steel General Manager Mike Garman. "We're thrilled to have these two great additions as we head into the rest of the season and playoffs."

Cal Thomas comes to Chicago from the Sioux Falls Stampede after posting 16 points (4G, 12A) in 35 games played to begin the 2021-2022 season. The Maple Grove, Minn., native was selected by the Arizona Coyotes in the Sixth Round (#171 Overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft. Thomas, a 6-foot, 185-pound blueliner is committed to the University of Minnesota. The Steel also receive two draft picks from Sioux Falls in the deal (2022 Phase I Ninth, 2023 Phase II Fourth).

Sioux Falls receives forward Luke Levandowski, defenseman Austen May and three draft picks (2022 Phase I First, 2022 Phase I Fourth, 2023 Phase II First).

"We wish Austen and Luke the best in Sioux Falls and appreciate all their hard work and dedication to the Steel this season," said Garman.

Hunter McDonald arrives from the Omaha Lancers where the 6-foot-3, 194-pound defenseman has appeared in 33 games, registering 10 points (3G, 7A) this season. A season ago, McDonald played in 36 regular season contests for Lancers with two goals and three helpers before appearing in Omaha's two playoff games. In the trade, Chicago also receives a 2023 Phase I Fifth round pick. The Steel send two draft picks (2022 Phase II Fifth, 2023 Phase I First [originally from OMA]) to the Lancers as well as future considerations.

Both Thomas and McDonald are expected to be in the lineup for Chicago's two-game homestand against the Tri-City Storm on Saturday, Feb. 5 and Sunday, Feb. 6.
