Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DES MOINES - Down 3-1 heading into the third period, the Dubuque Fighting Saints came to life. Connor Kurth scored two goals to force overtime, and Stephen Halliday scored the overtime winner in a netfront scramble to give the Saints a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the Des Moines Buccaneers on Friday at Buccaneer Arena.

Samuel Sjölund's initial opportunity on Halliday's set up from the slot was blocked, but as the puck was popping around, Halliday roofed the puck past a fallen Lucas Szyszka to give the Fighting Saints the win. It was the team's 20th win of the season, and thus, the 20th win in head coach Greg Brown's career. The power play resulted from a late double minor penalty for high sticking.

The Saints needed an offensive spark, and Brown moved offensive personnel around to generate offense. The move paid dividends. Riley Stuart and Max Burkholder played a give-and-go, and Burkholder set up Kurth right in front of the goal who stashed home his first goal of the night.

Halliday's home run pass from the defensive zone five minutes later caught Kurth in stride behind the Des Moines defense, and after pulling a little move, snapped the puck past Szyszka to tie the game at three apiece.

The Fighting Saints struck gold early in the first period. Hard work from Kenny Connors around the perimeter of the offensive zone led to the team's first chance of the night. Connors threaded the needle to Mikey Burchill, who opened the scoring at 6:02.

Des Moines took over from there and pulled the reversal.

Davis Burnside struck on a broken play from the high slot and scored on Philip Svedebäck just three minutes later. Lubomir Kupco added another two minutes later on a set play off a faceoff win- a top shelf snipe from the top of the right circle on a clean faceoff victory.

Joshua Barnes converted on Des Moines' power play in the second period, which extended the Buccaneers' lead to 3-1 at the 9:37 mark of the second period.

Svedebäck snapped a five-game losing streak with the victory, which was his first since November 5. He made 24 saves, which included all seven shots fired his way in the third period to keep the home team at bay offensively.

The two teams will close out the home-and-home series at the Mystique Community Ice Center for Clear the List Night with Kwik Stop. Donate school supplies to help local schools. Tickets are available at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
