Sauve Earns Player of the Week

December 16, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League announced today that Hershey Bears goaltender Philippe Sauve has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending December 15, 2002. Sauve was unbeaten in three games last week, posting a .961 save percentage and 0.97 goals against average.

The week began with a two-game series at Scope between Sauve's Bears and the Norfolk Admirals, with NHL veteran and 1997 AHL Hunt Memorial Award winner Steve Passmore. The two battled to a 1-1 tie on Wednesday before Sauve won the rematch Friday night, 3-2. On Sunday evening the Bears returned to the Giant Center to face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Sauve made 29 saves to post his second shutout of the season, moving the Bears into a tie with Norfolk for first place in the Western Conference.

In recognition of his achievement, Sauve will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Hershey Area Youth Hockey League in Sauve's name.

Born in Buffalo, N.Y., the 22-year-old Sauve has a record of 12-4-5 this season, ranking second in the AHL with a 2.08 goals against average and first in wins. His .924 save percentage places him in a tie for third overall, and he is currently riding a seven-game unbeaten streak (4-0-3).
