Saupold Tosses Another Gem

The SeaWolves could not hold a late lead on Monday night at NYSEG Stadium as they dropped the series opener to the Binghamton Mets 4-3.

The 'Wolves jumped ahead in the top of the firs against Mets starter Erik Goeddel. With two outs, Daniel Fields belted an opposite-field solo home run, his third, for a 1-0 lead. It was the second home run for Fields batting in the three hole in the lineup.

In the third, the SeaWolves built onto the lead again with two outs. Fields singled and moved into scoring position on a Tyler Collins. James McCann singled home Fields for a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, James Robbins led off with a single to right and he scored on a Luis Castillo opposite-field double making it 3-0 Erie.

Erie starter Warwick Saupold was brilliant for seven innings, holding the Mets without a run. He equaled his season-high with seven innings pitched allowing four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in a no-decision.

All four of the Mets runs came in the last of the eighth off of reliever Michael Morrison. Alonzo Harris led off and reached on an error. Darrel Ceciliani singled putting two on for Josh Rodriguez. Rodriguez walked to load the bases for Allan Dykstra. With Dykstra hitting, McCann attempted a pickoff a third and threw the ball into left field, allowing Harris to score making it 3-1. Dykstra then doubled off the wall in left, scoring Ceciliani, cutting the Erie lead down to a run. After Morrison struck out Joe Bonfe, Cesar Puello pushed a two-run double down the right field line, giving the Mets a 4-3 lead.

Jeff Walters worked a perfect ninth inning to preserve the Binghamton win.

The SeaWolves and Mets meet in the second game of a four-game series on Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium at 6:35 p.m. Lefty Matt Crouse makes a spot start for Erie against LHP Mark Cohoon.
