Baysox Fall Short After Wild Finish

Bowie, Md. - The Baysox (11-13) fell to the Richmond Flying Squirrels (12-13) 7-6 on a rainy, gloomy Monday night for their third loss in a row.

The team scored four runs on one hit, five walks and an error in the bottom of the eighth after trailing 7-2, but could not quite complete the comeback attempt. After doubling to lead off the top of the ninth inning, left fielder Henry Urrutia was thrown out at home plate by Richmond right fielder Brett Krill to keep the tying run from scoring. On the next play, second baseman Buck Britton was thrown out at home plate by left fielder Javier Herrera to again prevent the tying run from scoring.

Richmond struck first in the top of the first inning against Baysox starter Eddie Gamboa. Joe Panik singled to center field and moved to third base on a pair of passed balls before scoring on a Javier Herrera single to make the score 1-0.

The Flying Squirrels added a run in the top of the second inning. Andrew Susac drew a lead off walk and stole second base. He moved to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a single to right field by Ryan Lollis to give Richmond a 2-0 lead.

Richmond added another run in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Brett Krill was hit by a pitch and he moved to second base on a throwing error by center fielder Kyle Hudson after a flyout by Lollis. Ehire Adrianza plated Krill with a double to right field that made the score 3-0.

The Baysox got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning against Richmond starter Justin Fitzgerald. Urrutia reached on a force out at second base that was the second out of the inning. He moved to third base on a single to right field by second baseman Buck Britton and scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-1.

Javier Herrera hit a solo home run to left-center field in the top of the fifth inning to give Richmond a 4-1 lead.

The Baysox cut Richmond's lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Right fielder Xavier Avery drew a walk and moved to third base after a stolen base and throwing error on the catcher. Catcher Caleb Joseph plated Avery with a single to left field to make the score 4-2.

Richmond extended their lead in the top of the seventh inning. Panik, Mark Minicozzi and Ricky Oropesa each singled with the last scoring a run before Eric Beaulac replaced Gamboa on the mound. Beaulac walked the first two batters he faced to bring in a second run and make the score 6-2.

The Flying Squirrels scored again in the top of the eighth inning. Lollis hit a lead off double to left field and scored on a double to center field by Panik to give Richmond a 7-2 lead.

The Baysox closed the gap in the bottom of the eighth inning against Phil McCormick. Joseph drew a lead off walk but was eliminated at second base when Britton reached on a force out for the second out. Designated hitter Brandon Waring then drew a walk and first baseman Aaron Baker singled to plate Britton. Shortstop Zelous Wheeler drew a walk to load the bases and Fabio Castillo then replaced McCormick on the mound. Avery reached on a fielding error by Richmond shortstop Ehire Adrianza that scored two runs and the next two batters walked to bring in the fourth run of the inning and make the score 7-6.

Gamboa pitched six and two-thirds innings and allowed six runs (four earned) on 10 hits while striking out three and walking one in the loss. Beaulac pitched and one and one-third innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out three and walking two. Reliever Tom Boleska pitched a scoreless ninth inning and allowed one hit while striking out two.

Fitzgerald pitched seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out six and walking four in the win.

Edwin Quirarte earned his first save of the season for Richmond, recording the final four outs.

RHP Devin Jones (0-1, 5.17) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team plays the second in a four game home series with the Richmond Flying Squirrels. He will be opposed by LHP Jack Snodgrass (3-0, 2.01).

The Baysox are home through Thursday, May 2 for a seven game home stand. Highlights include Tightwad Tuesday beginning at 7:05 p.m. April 30 and Military Appreciation Day Wednesday beginning at 7:05 p.m.
