
Eastern League Names Pitcher and Player of the Week

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of April 22nd through April 28th:
Akron Aeros first baseman Chun-Hsiu Chen has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of April 22nd-April 28th. The 24-year old batted .471 (8-for-17) with three doubles, six RBI, two runs scored, one steal, five walks and a .647 slugging percentage in five games for the Aeros last week. Chen, who is a native of Hualian County, Taiwan, reached base in all five games he played in last week and had four multiple hit games, including going 2-for-4 with two doubles, four RBI and one run scored for the Aeros in a 5-4 win over Trenton on Wednesday night. The 5'11", 210 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in on-base percentage (.591) and OPS (1.238) last week and also ranked among the weekly leaders in batting average (.471-2nd), doubles (3-tied 2nd), RBI (6-tied 3rd), walks (5-tied 4th), hits (8-tied 5th), slugging percentage (.647-7th) and extra-base hits (3-tied 7th). Chen has reached base in 19 straight games for the Aeros and is batting .348 (24-for-69) with three home runs and 16 RBI in 20 games this season to go along with a league-best .477 on-base percentage. Chun-Hsiu, who hit .308 with 30 doubles and 62 runs scored in 108 games for the Aeros last season, was signed by the Cleveland Indians as a non-drafted free agent on September 14, 2007.
Jesse Biddle, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Reading Fightin Phils, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 22nd-April 28th. The 6'4", 225 lb. hurler made a pair of starts for the Fightin Phils last week and had a record of 1-0 with 26 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Biddle, who is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, made his first start of the week on Monday night at Harrisburg and set a Reading modern day record with 16 strikeouts in a 3-2 victory. He took a perfect game into the seventh inning and picked up the win after giving up just one hit and two walks over seven shutout innings. In his second appearance of the week on Sunday afternoon against visiting New Hampshire, the 21-year old gave up just one hit and three walks while striking out 10 batters over six shutout innings in a no-decision. Biddle currently leads the league in strikeouts (40) and batting average against (.114) and is also among the leaders in WHIP (0.77-2nd), innings pitched (31.0-3rd) and ERA (1.74-4th). Jesse, who entered the season rated as the top prospect in the Philadelphia organization, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round of the 2010 draft with the 27th overall selection out of Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
