Staten Island FerryHawks News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY- Yunior Santana's two-out bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Ricardo Cespedes, sending the FerryHawks to a 1-0 walk-off win over the Long Island Ducks Friday night at SIUH Community Park. Four consecutive FerryHawks reached with two outs against Kai-Wei Lin, earning Staten Island their second 'Battle of the Belt' victory.
After striking out Angel Aguilar and Mariel Bautista to start the bottom of the ninth, Lin allowed an infield single to Cespedes, before walking Joseph Monge. Javier Betancourt followed with yet another infield single, setting the stage for Santana in the scoreless game. He lined Lin's 2-2 offer up the middle to give the FerryHawks their third walk-off victory of the season. The FerryHawks had three hits in the first eight innings, and three more hits in the ninth inning alone.
Anthony Rodriguez went five innings for the second time in his professional career, allowing just three hits. Despite walking five, he managed the navigate out of multiple Ducks threats.
Stephen Tarpley matched Rodriguez with his best start of the season, going seven shutout innings with just two hits allowed. He whiffed a season-high 10 and walked just two.
Eric Marinez was first out of the bullpen for the FerryHawks - he walked the first two batters he faced in the sixth inning. Even so, the right-hander retired the next three Ducks to preserve the scoreless tie.
Eddy Reynoso (3-2) not only tossed the final three innings for the FerryHawks, he faced the minimum nine batters. A ninth inning single by Joe DeCarlo served as the Ducks first hit since the fourth inning.
Staten Island (13-30) play the middle game of their three-game set on Saturday evening at SIUH Community Park. LHP Anthony Auletta starts for Staten Island against RHP Scott Harkin with first pitch at 6:00 PM. The FerryHawks Pregame Show begins at 5:45 PM on the SI FerryHawks Baseball Network.
Postgame Notes: The winning run snapped Staten Island's 21-inning scoreless drought...FerryHawks pitching has not allowed an earned run over the last 19 innings...Yunior Santana (2-for-4) was the only player on either team to record a multi-hit game...Long Island finished 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
