Santa Cruz Warriors Drop Home Matchup against Salt Lake City Stars, 102-77
SANTA CRUZ, CA - The Santa Cruz Warriors (3-2) fell behind early and didn't recover against the Salt Lake City Stars (2-2) at Kaiser Permanente Arena, 102-77. Tonight is the first home loss against the Stars since January 14, 2017 and the team's first home loss of the 2019-20 season.
The Warriors were led by forward Juan Toscano-Anderson with 14 points and 11 rebounds, his first double-double of the season. The Warriors five-man bench unit, who totaled 35 points and nine steals tonight, were led by swingman Devyn Marble with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting with two steals. Center Deyonta Davis added 10 points and six rebounds in 20 minutes of action.
The Stars had six players in double figures tonight, starting with Utah Jazz assignment player Miye Oni with 18 points and a game-high five steals. Two Stars logged double-doubles tonight; Juwan Morgan's 17 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks and Kyle Collinsworth's 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Salt Lake City went on an 11-0 run in the first five minutes to take their first and final lead of the night. The Warriors committed nine turnovers in the first quarter, with Oni and Collinsworth combining for 15 points to give the Stars a 29-15 first quarter lead. The Stars beat the Warriors in the open court with a 20-4 fast break advantage in the first half to take commanding 61-44 halftime advantage.
The Stars opened the second half on an 8-2 run on four layups, with six of those points coming from Oni. Santa Cruz rebounded from a 12 point scoring output in the third quarter to outscore Salt Lake City in the fourth, 21-18, as Jared Cunningham scored seven in the fourth quarter and helped Santa Cruz to a turnover free fourth frame. However, the Warriors couldn't cut the deficit to fewer than 25 points as Santa Cruz takes their first loss since Opening Night in Stockton on November 8.
The Warriors will look ahead to host the Northern Arizona Suns at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Thursday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m. PST.
