Santa Cruz Defeated by Maine Red Claws

PORTLAND, Maine - The NBA D-League Champion Santa Cruz Warriors (9-10) fell to the Maine Red Claws (11-6) 104-87 on Saturday night at the Portland Expo Building.

Santa Cruz's Daniel Orton notched a game-high 22 points on a 9-of-12 shooting effort. Daniel Nwaelele had 15 points, while Darington Hobson had 12 points in the loss to Maine. Santa Cruz was once again without leading scorer Elliot Williams.

Six different players for Maine scored in double-figures led by Jordan Mickey who posted 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. Davion Berry scored 16 points and 6 assists, while Omari Johnson and Coty Clarke had 14 apiece in the victory. Maine made 14 three-point shots on 36 attempts.

The first quarter would see a tightly-contested battle complete with three lead changes and two ties. Big man Daniel Orton scored the first 6 points for Santa Cruz, and would have 10 total points on the quarter. Neither team would extend their lead beyond four points in the opening frame, as Santa Cruz was held to 20 first-quarter points for the first time all season.

The second quarter would see the Red Claws extend their lead to as many as 11 points behind five made three-point shots, securing the nine-point advantage heading into the locker room.

Maine would increase its distance from Santa Cruz by outscoring the Warriors 32-19 in the third quarter. The remainder of the game would see Maine continue to keep Santa Cruz out of striking distance, leading by as many as 22 points in the final frame.
