Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD, Me - Guess who's back, back again.
For the first time since opening day, the Mainers are back to .500 after winning both games in the doubleheader with Mystic, 2-1 in game one and 4-0 in game two.
Matthew Sapienza (Georgetown) got his second start off the year in the first contest and settled in after early trouble. His final line read, five innings, two hits, with two strikeouts and no runs given up.
It helped that his offense gave him an early lead in the top of the second. Kevin Skaglerind (UMass) did his job with a sacrifice fly to drive in David Bermudez (Manhattan), 1-0.
The score stayed where it was until the fifth inning when Adam Dapkewicz (Georgetown) led off with a double the other way and eventually made it to third on a passed ball. With the infield crept in, Aidan Kane hit a line drive into left field to score Dapkewicz, 2-0.
The Schooners scored in the bottom of the sixth when Mason LaPlante doubled and brought in Eddie Micheletti from first, 2-1.
Brian Craven (William & Mary) came in from the seventh and shut the door to give the Mainers the win in game one.
Game two followed a similar storyline with Mystic threatening early in the contest but couldn't break through.
In game two, Ryan Douglas (UNC-Asheville) was the bump for the Mainers, with Brett Wichrowski (Bryant) starting for Mystic.
The Moose struck in the fourth as Quinn McDaniel (Maine) scored on a sacrifice fly from Bermudez. Later in the inning, a double from Devan Bade (Binghamton) drove in Kane, 2-0.
In the fifth, Sanford's offense jumped on reliever Jackson DeJohn (St. Bonaventure) to double their lead.
McDaniel got on with a triple when the ball disappeared in the "twilight" for left fielder Kevin Ferrer (UConn), then a walk from Kane put runners on the corners. Jake Rainess roped one into right-center for the second triple of the inning, allowing both runners to score, 4-0.
Douglas had a stellar bounce-back start for the Mainers, going six innings striking out six giving up only three hits.
It was newcomer Carson Frye (Georgetown) to close out the seventh, where the green and yellow turned a 5-4-3 double play to cap off the sweep.
The Mainers are back, tell a friend.
After today they are 16-16 on the year and hold the final wild-card spot heading into the weekend. Despite the tough day, Mystic still maintains one of the other wild-card spots with an 18-14 mark.
Sanford is back on the road for a date with the Ocean State Waves, where Ryan Butler (Liberty) will be the starter.
In the first meeting, the Afthim brothers combined for a 10-0 shutout of the Waves at Goodall Park.
