Sanford Mainers News Release

After a disappointing start to the season where the Mainers dropped their first three games, the team was more than ready to come out on top. On Friday, the Mainers hosted the North Adams SteepleCats, and some late inning, much needed offense propelled the green and yellow into their first victory of the season as they beat the SteepleCats 8-3.

James Bourque got the start for home town heroes and though he didn't record a decision, pitched well for his first start of the season. He allowed 3 runs over 5.2 innings of work, but only 1 run was earned. He left the game with only 2 walks and 6 strike outs.

The SteepleCats threatened to grab the board first when they loaded the bases with 1 out in the top of the first, but an inning ending double play got Bourque out of the jam.

In the bottom half, the Mainers approached SteepleCats pitcher Tobie Scwartz and jumped on him early. Troy Black led off the inning with an infield single, followed by a walk to Will Cooper. After a ground out and a throwing error by catcher Cody Doyle to Schwartz on a wild pitch, Black came into score the game's first run.

The Mainers tacked on another run in the fifth, extending their lead to 2-0, but the SteepleCats fought back taking ahold of the lead scoring three times in the top of the sixth. It all started when Vinny Zarillo walked to start the inning. After a fly out for the first out, Kevin Martir reached on a throwing error by Phil Mosey allowing both Zarillo and Martir to get into scoring position.

Bourque seemed out of the clear when he got Bryan Soloman to strike out swinging, but gave up a double to Julian Lorat de Mola that tied the game at 2. Lorat de Mola scored on the next play on a bloop single to left off the bat of Doyle.

It was all Mainers in the later innings when they scored four times in the seventh and twice more in the eighth. Black and Cooper led off the inning with a single and a hit by pitch respectively and advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Cole Martin. Mosey was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Two runs came into score on an infield single by Anthony Papio, while Nate LaPointe blasted a double to deep left-center field to score two more.

Schwartz lasted only 3.2 innings allowing only 1 unearned run while walking 3 and striking out 4. It was Trevor Swaney who collected the loss for the SteepleCats as he pitched 1.1 innings in relief allowing 3 runs on 1 hit.

The Mainers improve to 1-3 on the season and will return home again tomorrow to host the Plymouth Pilgrims. The Pilgrims grabbed the first game of the season series last week. The Mainers will look to return the favor as they send EJ Ashworth to the mound. Game time slated for 6:30pm.
