Swamp Bats Lose On The Road At Mystic 7-4

June 14, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Keene Swamp Bats News Release

The Swamp Bats' early season woes continued Friday night, losing yet again on the road to the Mystic Schooners 7-4.

Joe McCarthy took the mound for the Swamp Bats but continued the Swamp Bat's early pitching woes, only lasting three innings while giving up six runs. McCarthy gave up a two run homerun to Tyler Boyd in the first inning and was bombarded in the fourth inning, surrendering four more runs for the Schooners.

John Birkbeck came on to relieve McCarthy and impressed in his second relief appearance of the season. Birkbeck went 3.1 innings, striking out five men and only giving up one run. Paul Covelle also came on in relief and struck out three men in two innings of work.

The Swamp Bats, again in an early deficit, tried to rally against the Schooners, but couldn't produce quite enough runs. Trailing 6-1, Keene got the bats going, and the lead to 6-4 on a bases loaded catcher interference call, a walk, and a Ryan Lukach single. Keene failed to capitalize though with one out and bases loaded, as Dylan Moore stuck out and Nate Irving flied out to center field to end the threat.

The loss drops Keene's record to 0-4 on the young season. The Swamp Bats will be back at it at Alumni Field on Saturday against the Saratoga Brigade. First pitch is set for 6:30.
