Sanford Mainers News Release

SANFORD, Me. - After an unsuccessful trip to Upper Valley, the Mainers returned to Goodall Park looking to stop red-hot Newport. However, the Gulls offense had other plans as they blitzed Sanford in the late stages to take control, 8-3.

Ryan Douglas (UNC-Asheville) was back on the mound for the first time since Opening Day. The right-hander had his only blemishes come in his opening inning and last inning of work.

In the top of the first, Slate Alford (Mississippi State) drove in Sam Kulasingam (Air Force), 1-0.

Then in the sixth, Kulasingam continued his strong campaign to start the year with a two-out single that scored Cam Clayton (Washington).

Douglas would bow out after six innings of work, allowing two earned runs on six hits, while striking out six and walking three. He has gone six innings in both games that he pitched to start the year and holds a 3.00 ERA.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Mainers would work some of their own magic to tie it. Devan Bade (Binghamton) reached on a walk and then with two-outs made his way to third on two wild pitches and then would bolt for home when the next one got away. Aidan Kane would be the next one to take advantage of the miscues, scoring on another wild pitch, 2-2.

Newport would tack on two runs in the seventh and later extended the lead up to five after the top of the eighth.

Grant Knipp (Campbell) continued his great start to the year by launching a ball over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season, 7-3.

The Gulls would nab another run in the ninth, but the Mainer bats could not create any more magic as they dropped their second in a row. Meanwhile, Newport extends their winning streak to six games.

Sanford is back on the road tomorrow for a quick road trip to take on the Winnipesaukee Muskrats, Sonny Fauci is expected to be on the mound with the first pitch coming in at 6 p.m.
