Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - Vermont was back in action tonight in a double header expedition against the Ocean State Waves. The Mountaineers would win one with ease and find themselves digging in deep to pull out a gutsy extra-inning win in game two.
Box Score (Game 1) | Box Score (Game 2)
In game one the Vermont squad had it their way the whole time. Earning a seven to zero victory. Ben Williamson (William & Mary College of Midlothian, Virginia) currently hitting .407 had an RBI and scored a run himself. Helping the cause on the night were teammates Matthew Venuto (Fairfield U, Mansfield, Massachusetts), and Stephen DiTomaso ( George Washington U, Haddonfield, New Jersey) each knocked in two RBIs.
The pitching staff was once again a huge point of success as Vermont threw three pitchers that gained the shutout. Nick Durgan (Stetson U, Melbourne, Florida) started on the hill and went three and two-thirds innings with no hits and no runs. Brendan McFall (Tufts U, Oceanside, New York) got the win for the Vermont squad as he dealt one and one-third innings giving up the only hit of the game and no runs. Joe Cinnella (Seton Hall U, Mahwah, New Jersey) would get the loss and Ocean State dropped to three and five on the season after game one, and Vermont improved to seven wins with no losses.
Game two was a bit of a different story. Vermont was tested in this one as it would take extra innings for Vermont to keep the winning streak alive for another day. A close play in the bottom of the ninth inning would send Vermont to a 4-3 walk-off win.
Ocean State struck first and scored one run in the second inning and would keep that lead until the fifth inning when Vermont rallied and scored two. Kade Kretzschmar (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Carlsbad, California) drove in three runs for the Mountaineers and was a huge part of the game's two successes.
Vermont would score one more in the sixth to take a three-to-one lead but Ocean State wasn't finished just yet. An error in the seventh inning would allow the Waves to score two more runs and tie the game, forcing extras when Vermont couldn't score in the bottom of the seventh.
Once again pitching was huge for Vermont late in this one. The biggest outing most likely came from Mitchell Pascarella (Connecticut U of, Lakewood, New York) who got the win in game two and recorded the three biggest outs of the game.
Vermont would load the bases up in the bottom of the ninth and sent Kade Kretzschmar to the plate in a big spot once again. A ground ball on a two-two count to third forced a play at the plate and Vermont narrowly slipped away with a run as the home plate umpire said the foot came off the plate while stretching to make the play. The final score of game two was 4-3 as Vermont improves to an impressive, league-best eight and zero.
Vermont returns to action on the road in Keene, N.H. tomorrow against the Keene Swampbats. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM and can be watched online on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
