Sanchez, Barnstormers, Boil Blue Crabs

Lancaster Stormers News Release

For the last week, Barnstormers' starters have been nearly untouchable. Monday night was no different.

Jose Sanchez, facing the Blue Crabs for the second straight start, went to the seventh inning before giving up a run, and ended up allowing 2 in 6 1/3, while striking out three on the day. After Sanchez (6-11) left the game, the bullpen retired 8 straight batters to preserve a 3-2 win for the Barnstormers, their seventh win in eight games.

The Barnstormers were able to take advantage of miscues by the Blue Crabs to score runs early in the game. In the second inning, Reggie Taylor reached on a walk to lead off the inning. Ryan Mulhern hit a grounder to third, and Jesse Owens threw the ball over first baseman Eric Crozier's head.

Taylor took a wide turn around third, but seemed to be heading back to the bag when Crozier threw the ball in to the plate. Catcher Christian Lopez didn't see the throw coming, and the ball got back to the screen. Taylor came in to score on the throw, and Mulhern advanced to third.

After a pop up by Adam Witter, Michael Woods singled to right. He took a wide turn around first, and when the throw came in, Crozier cut it off and had Woods trapped. Woods sprinted for second, and when Crozier tried to chase him down, Mulhern took off for the plate. Crozier wheeled and tried to make a play at the plate, but the throw was wide and Crozier was given his second error in the inning.

The Barnstormers led 2-0 going into the 4th, when Reggie Taylor swung at the first pitch he saw from Joe Newby, crushing a home run out to right that went out on the line.

Newby (6-5) would settle down, but the Blue Crabs couldn't make up the deficit. After scoring a run off of back to back doubles by Ben Harrison and Richard Giannotti in the 7th, Justin Armiger singled, putting runners on the corners with one out. Pat Overholt came in, and while Giannotti would score on a sacrifice fly, Overholt retired 5 straight batters to get through the 7th and 8th.

Tim Hamulack came in to preserve the lead in the 9th, and struck out the first two batters he faced. Giannotti hit a looping fly ball to shallow center, but Michael Woods was able to rush in and make a diving catch to end the game, and help Hamulack earn his ninth save of the season.

Despite the win, the Barnstormers remain a game back of Somerset for the Freedom Division second half crown. The Barnstormers face the Blue Crabs again Tuesday at Clipper Magazine Stadium with a 6:30 start. The Barnstormers are yet to officially announce their pitcher, as Ben Fritz will miss another start, while the Blue Crabs will start Brandon Mann (0-0).
