York Revolution News Release
Jose Herrera nailed an RBI double to the gap in right-center, extending his hitting streak to 16 consecutive games, and driving in Scott Grimes for his Atlantic League single-season record-tying 119th run scored with two outs in the ninth, but the York Revolution could not bring the tying run home, losing 7-6 to the Long Island Ducks in Monday's opener at Sovereign Bank Stadium. The seven-game homestand continues on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
In a back-and-forth battle, the Ducks took the lead for good with four runs in the eighth inning, but the Revs scored runs in the eighth and ninth, and had the winning run in scoring position when Ducks closer Kane Davis induced a ground ball to second base for the final out.
York jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Grimes led off the first inning with a double off the right field fence, and scored his 118th run on a single to right by Liubiemithz Rodriguez. In an encore an inning later, it was Ian Bladergroen who led off with a double to right, and scored on a single up the middle by John Pachot, whose hitting streak grew to nine games.
The Ducks tied it in the fourth, when Billy Kovatch led off with an infield single, and Robinson Cancel blasted a two-run homer to left, extending his hitting streak to 16 consecutive games, and his on-base streak to 34 consecutive games, tops in the league this season. It was also his team-leading 13th homerun.
Erick Monzon launched a high two-run homer to left field an inning later, giving Long Island their first lead at 3-2.
Ducks lefty Randy Keisler took a string of 11 consecutive batters retired into the sixth inning, but Rodriguez reached on an error, which followed with a walk to Ramon Castro, and a wild pitch, setting up York's go-ahead runs. Herrera drove in the tying run on a grounder to short, and with two outs, Bladergroen blooped a single into center, lifting the Revs on top 4-3.
York missed a chance off Keisler in the seventh. Pachot led off with a double high off the Arch Nemesis in left, and moved to third on a single by Chuck Jeroloman, who executed a fake-bunt. But Keisler wriggled out of the jam, and caught Pachot in a rundown, running on contact with one out on a comebacker to the mound.
The Revs had worked out of their own predicament in the top of the seventh, when with two on and none out, Eric Ackerman came on in relief to record a double play, and a strike out of Monzon to hold a then 4-3 lead in check.
The Ducks went ahead with four in the eighth, however, ignited by a Joey Gathright double to deep left-center. Gathright advanced to third on a fly out to right-center. With the infield drawn-in, Kovatch reached on an error landing runners at the corners in a one-run game. Cancel then chopped a seeing-eye single through the right side to tie the game, and Willis Otanez gave the Ducks the lead on a ground single to left. With two outs, Matt Esquivel roped a two-run double just past Rodriguez' outstretched glove and into right-center, propelling Long Island in front 7-4.
The Revs inched back on a sac fly from Erold Andrus in the eighth, and pulled within one on Herrera's ninth inning double. Castro was held at third on Herrera's double as Gathright quickly retrieved the ball from the warning track, and was stranded there.
Keisler (3-0) earned the win, allowing four runs (two earned) in seven innings, beating the Revs for the second time in five days. He has now allowed just four earned runs in 27.0 innings spanning his last four starts.
Revs starter Matt DeSalvo turned in a second consecutive quality start, allowing only three runs in six-plus innings.
Sean Stidfole (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing the four runs in the eighth, only one of which was earned.
Notes: Reliever Cory Willey made his Revolution debut with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Herrera and Cancel each have 16-game hitting streaks, which are the longest active streaks currently in the league. The Revs' six-game losing streak is a season-high. Tim Harikkala will face former York lefty Daryl Harang Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. Gates open at 5:30. Tickets are available for all of the Revs' remaining regular season home games, and playoff tickets are also now on-sale for the Revs' Sprint to the Championship, at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
