SAN JOSE SHARKS SIGN 2007 FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK NICK PETRECKI
SAN JOSE - San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed defenseman Nick Petrecki, the team's first round (28th overall) selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, to an NHL contract. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Petrecki has spent the last two seasons playing at Boston College. This season, the Schenectady, NY native has posted seven assists in 35 games. The sturdy defenseman also registered 161 penalty minutes, which ranked first on the team.
Petrecki played a significant role on Boston College's 2008 National Championship team. The six-foot-three, 220-pound defenseman played in 42 games for the Eagles, registering 12 points (five goals, seven assists) while amassing 102 penalty minutes.
Petrecki also notched the overtime, game-winning goal to give Boston College the victory over Harvard in the Beanpot Tournament championship game on Feb. 11, 2008.
He was selected to participate in the U.S. National Junior Team Evaluation Camp in August 2008 in Lake Placid, N.Y.
"Nick has been a staple on the Boston College blue line for the last two seasons and has been a big part of their success," said Wilson. "We are thankful that Nick was afforded the opportunity to be a part of the winning tradition that Coach Jerry York has established at BC. The experiences he has had over the last two years will go a long way in his continued development into a quality NHL player with our organization."
SAN JOSE SHARKS SIGN FREE AGENT DEFENSEMAN JOE LOPRIENO
SAN JOSE - San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the team has signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Joe Loprieno to an entry-level contract. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Loprieno, a 22-year old defenseman, recently completed his junior season at Merrimack College, where he posted six points (two goals, four assists) in 22 games, while also ranking second on the team in penalty minutes (50).
The six-foot-three, 225-pound native of Bloomingdale, Illinois has posted 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) along with 190 penalty minutes in 88 games for Merrimack, where he was named as one of the team's captains this season.
During his 2007-08 season, the physical defenseman received Merrimack's Warrior Award, which is awarded to the player who shows perseverance, toughness and dedication to the Merrimack program.
"Joe is a tough, physical player who has shown a tremendous amount of progress under Head Coach Mark Dennehy and the Merrimack hockey program," said Wilson. "We look forward to working with Joe to help him further his development as a professional hockey player and we welcome him into the Sharks organization."
