San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls (2-0-0) recorded two consecutive wins against the Long Beach Ice Dogs this past weekend. Opening Night for the Gulls saw them pummel the Ice Dogs in front of the first sellout crowd since 1999. Newcomer R.J. Enga ended the weekend with five points while former Colorado Gold Kings teammate, Mike Garrow came away with four points. Gulls goaltender, Trevor Koenig registered his 10th career West Coast Hockey League shutout Saturday night tying him with Sergei Naumov for an all-time league high. Koenig now has nine shutouts as a Gull.
COMMUNITY UPDATE: Oct. 16: Gulls players Joe Bianchi and Dennis Mullen hosted three assemblies at King Middle School in Oceanside. The students there are preparing to launch a large fundraising effort selling Gulls tickets. Bianchi and Mullen dressed up one student from each assembly while explaining how each piece of gear is used.
Oct. 27: Come skate with the Gulls after they host the Bakersfield Condors. All Gulls players will be available to skate with the fans one hour following the game.
Nov. 1: Make-A-Wish "Jerseys Off Their Backs" night. For one night and one night only, the Gulls will don special "Make a Wish" jerseys as they host the Idaho Steelheads. A silent auction will be held on the concourse during the game, and the winners of each jersey will be announced during the third period. All proceeds will benefit the San Diego Make-A-Wish Foundation. The goal for the evening is to raise enough money to grant three San Diego area children their wish.
LAST WEEK:
GULLS 6, Long Beach 0; at San Diego, Saturday, Oct. 12: Koenig turned aside all 30 shots while Enga added three points en route to the Gulls' 6-0 thrashing of Long Beach Saturday night, before a sellout Opening Night crowd of 12,920 at the San Diego Sports Arena. The Gulls are now 6-2 all-time on Opening Night and 7-0-1 in home openers.
GULLS 5, Long Beach 4; at San Diego, Sunday, Oct. 13: San Diego jumped out to a 4-0 lead, highlighted by Garrow's natural hat trick in the first period, only to escape with the one-goal win. Long Beach cut the lead to 4-2 entering the third, but Mark Pederson's second straight game-winning goal, which came just 22 seconds into the third period, proved too much for the Dogs to overcome. Specialty teams were the story as each club scored four power-play goals, while the Gulls also added a short-hander.
THIS WEEK:
The Gulls embark on its first road trip of the season beginning this Sunday in Bakersfield. The Blue and Orange will also play twice in Idaho and once in Long Beach next week before returning home against the Condors Sunday, Oct. 27. All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO and at www.ksdo.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play.
