San Antonio's 10-Run Seventh Stuns Midland

May 1, 2017 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release

San Antonio erased a nine-run deficit in the seventh with an epic 10-run rally to shock Midland 11-10 Sunday afternoon before a season-high sellout crowd of 8,085 at Wolff Stadium.

The Missions, looking to snap a five-game losing skid, had talented right-hander Enyel De Los Santos on the bump Sunday. De Los Santos entered with an impressive 2.75 ERA over four outings at the Double-A level.

Unfortunately, for San Antonio, Sunday was not his best showing. The 21-year-old hurler's trouble began in the second when he allowed solo homers to Joe Bennie and Argenis Raga . The two dingers were the first allowed by a Missions starter all season.

San Antonio got one of the runs back in its half against Heath Fillmyer courtesy of a Franmil Reyes RBI single to left center that scored Stephen McGee .

Unfazed, the RockHounds went back to work on De Los Santos in the third, blowing the game open with a five-run rally highlighted by Tyler Marincov 's grand slam onto the berm in left.

De Los Santos allowed another run in the fourth, his final inning of the afternoon. All eight of the runs were earned for De Los Santos, who also struck out five.

Midland appeared to tack on two more insurance runs in the seventh against reliever Cesar Vargas (1-2) with Marincov's double down the left-field line. But the game changed dramatically from there.

Stephen McGee began the bottom of the seventh against reliever Joel Seddon with a chopper down the third base line that was misplayed by Jordan Tarsovich . After a Noah Perio walk, Franmil Reyes split the right-center gap with a double, scoring McGee. Alberth Martinez followed with a single to right that brought in Perio to slice the deficit to seven. A River Stevens walk would end the day for Seddon, who was replaced by Cody Stull with the bases loaded. Midland's relief corps continued its wild ways as Stull walked his first batter, Luis Urias and then a wild pitch scored Martinez to make the score 10-5.

Stull would retire Jose Rondon on strikes, but next batter, Nick Schulz dropped a single into right that cut the lead to just four. After a Nick Torres double scored Urias to make it 10-7, Midland went to the pen again for Sam Bragg . That brought up McGee, who kept the rally going with a ground rule double to left center, which scored both Schulz and Torres. Bragg (2-1) would then fan Perio after a very lengthy at-bat. But the right-hander could not escape the inning with the lead as Reyes sent the huge Wolff crowd into a frenzy with a dramatic, deep two-run shot to left center.

Relievers Adam Cimber and Chad Nading (3rd save) made sure the memorable comeback stuck as the two chipped in perfect innings of relief.

San Antonio (10-13) concludes its four-game series with Midland (11-12) Monday at 7:05 PM. RH Brett Kennedy (0-1, 9.42) will get the ball for the Missions, while the 'Hounds counter with RH Kyle Friedrichs (0-2, 5.63). Monday will be an H-E-B Family Night, where fans can purchase four box seats for just $24 at the Missions' box office with a receipt from H-E-B.

Notes: It was San Antonio's first double-digit scoring inning since April 14, 2013 at Springfield when they plated 11 in the fifth during a 15-9 win.
