San Antonio Missions News Release
A terrific start by Brett Kennedy and a well-balanced offensive helped San Antonio to a 10-0 rout of Midland Monday night at Wolff Stadium.
Kennedy took the ball in Monday's series finale looking to snap out of a recent funk. The 23-year-old hurler lasted three innings or less in each of his last two starts, with the first occurring at Midland when he allowed a career-high, tying eight runs.
Fortunately for the Missions, Kennedy came out dealing on Monday, setting down the first 12 RockHounds. Kennedy allowed just three hits and one walk, while striking out four over a career-high, tying seven shutout innings. The former Fordham University star threw 64 of his 102 pitches for strikes.
Kennedy (1-1) did not need much offensive support, but he certainly received it.
San Antonio plated two in the bottom of the second against righty Kyle Friedrichs (0-3) on RBI hits by River Stevens (single) and Alberth Martinez (double). Two innings later, against reliever Jesus Zambrano, the Missions used the long ball to expand the lead. Martinez took Zambrano's first pitch over the wall in left to make the score 3-0. Three batters later, Jose Rondon added a two-run shot to push the lead to five.
After San Antonio added two more in the fifth off Zambrano, Nick Schulz upped the lead to 9-0 in the sixth with a mammoth two-run blast through the trees in left center off Ben Bracewell. It was his league-leading eighth dinger of the season. Franmil Reyes capped scoring in the eighth with an RBI double to left center.
Trey Wingenter and Brad Wieck each tossed an inning to cap San Antonio's league-leading third shutout of the season.
San Antonio (11-13) begins an eight-game road trip Tuesday with the first of four against Frisco (12-12). First pitch from Dr Pepper Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Kyle Lloyd (2-3, 5.40) will get the ball for the Missions in the opener, while the 'Riders counter with fellow righty Collin Wiles (3-0, 3.00).
