San Antonio FC News Release
ALBUQUERQUE - San Antonio FC (3-5-1) fell 0-3 to New Mexico United (4-1-5) at Isotopes Park on Sunday night. The Alamo City club continues to search for its first win on the road and will return to Toyota Field to play its next three matches at home, including its first Open Cup match of the season.
"I thought our players created several opportunities tonight, but we didn't capitalize on them," SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. "New Mexico took full advantage of the chances they presented themselves with, and when they scored the second goal the momentum continued to be in their favor. Our players are bitterly disappointed, but we need to put this behind us and prepare for next weekend."
New Mexico opened the scoring just nine minutes in after forward Devon Sandoval found the back of the net following a counter attack. SAFC outshot the hosts throughout the rest of the first half, but was unable to find an equalizer at the break.
United extended its lead in the second half after midfielder Santi Moar found teammate Chris Wehan with a cutback pass, which the midfielder buried to make it 0-2. Wehan found a second goal just four minutes later off a through-ball from Kevon Frater which he slotted past goalkeeper Matthew Cardone to make it 0-3.
SAFC recorded 14 shots and three shots on target while maintaining 50% possession and an 80% passing accuracy, while Cardone recorded three saves and one claim on the night.
San Antonio FC will return to USL Championship action on Saturday, May 11 as the club hosts Orange County SC at Toyota Field.
