Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
CHICAGO - Dubuque Fighting Saints defenseman Samuel Sjölund has been honored by the league as USHL Defenseman of the Week for week 14 of the 2021-22 season. The Swede leads all Dubuque defensemen in scoring, and tied the league lead for defensive scoring from December 20 onward, to go along with a +4 rating.
Sjölund, committed to Western Michigan University, and drafted by the Dallas Stars in the 4th round in 2019, has been a constant for the Fighting Saints both offensively and defensively. The Saints' second round pick in Phase II scored a goal and an assist in a 5-4 loss to Cedar Rapids on December 27 and followed it up with two assists in an 8-0 win over Waterloo on December 29.
Sjölund has the third-highest shooting percentage among defensemen who have played 20 or more games (20.7%). Three of his six goals and four of his seven assists have come on the power play, where he quarterbacks at the top of the umbrella formation on the top power play unit.
The native of Stockholm rose through the AIK junior program and was a solid two-way defenseman throughout his career. He won the TV-Pucken gold medal in 2017, which is a hockey tournament that showcases the best teams of players under 15.
Sjölund joins Ryan Beck, Stephen Halliday, Conor Kurth and Tristan Lemyre as honorees by the USHL this season. Dubuque has captured league honors six times during the 2021-22 season.
