Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
First Games of 2022
The Black Hawks play their first game of the new calendar year on the road against the Sioux Falls Stampede (10-15-1) Friday at 7:05 p.m. Waterloo is 2-1-0 against Sioux Falls this season, including a 3-0 win during the series' only previous road game on November 6th. The upcoming matchup represents the midpoint of a seven-game regular season series between the clubs. Then Saturday at 6:05 p.m., the Hawks are on home ice against the Tri-City Storm (20-5-1). Tri-City won all three meetings at Viaero Center this year; Saturday is the first of three remaining games, all at Young Arena.
Schifsky Among Goal Leaders
Since the beginning of November, opponents have not held Garrett Schifsky without a goal for more than two consecutive games. Last week, he scored against Sioux City and Des Moines to push his goal total for this season up to 13. That ties him for 12th in the USHL. He is level with Owen McLaughlin and Charlie Schoen of the Sioux City Musketeers for the most goals by any player in the Western Conference. Schifsky is responsible for five of the Black Hawks' 16 power play goals.
Four for the Win
Waterloo's 5-3 victory against the Des Moines Buccaneers last week marked the eighth time this season that the Hawks have scored four or more goals in a game. Waterloo has won on each of those nights. After several successful results in low-scoring early-season games, the team's last win when scoring three goals or fewer was a 2-1 overtime decision against the Madison Capitols on November 24th.
LaStarza's Delightful December
Michael LaStarza had four multipoint performances during the Black Hawks' eight December games. The second-year forward led Waterloo in scoring over the month with nine points (three goals, six assists). LaStarza also now tops the Hawks' stat sheet for this season with 21 points (eight goals, 13 assists). He is three points shy of equaling the 24 he produced last year as a USHL rookie in 50 games. Seventeen of his points (including all nine last month) have come in even-strength situations.
Recent Games
The Black Hawks played three times in four days coming out of the USHL's Christmas break. Last Tuesday, the Sioux City Musketeers took a 3-0 lead by the early second period, and Waterloo could only climb back as close as 4-3 before ultimately falling 7-3. The next night against the Dubuque Fighting Saints, Dubuque scored three in the first and five in the second for an 8-0 result. Waterloo recovered on New Year's Eve for a 5-3 win against the Des Moines Buccaneers. Tyler Kostelecky had the game-winning goal, plus an assist.
