Samardzija strikes out seven in second rehab start
June 22, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, CA - Giants' right-hander Jeff Samardzija made his second successful rehab start on Thursday, but the Sacramento River Cats (33-40) fell to the El Paso Chihuahuas (36-37) 10-1 for their fifth straight loss.
Samardzija kept the game close through four innings as the 11-year veteran struck out seven and walked none while surrendering two runs. But the River Cats' bullpen would allow eight runs in the final five frames, including five in a tough outing for righty Jose Valdez, as the game quickly got out of hand.
First baseman Chase d'Arnaud's 14th multi-hit game of the season led the River Cats offensively as his fifth-inning single knocked in the team's only run of the game.
Lefty Matt Gage (3-5, 6.10) will be on the hill for Sacramento in game two of the series while El Paso will counter with right-hander Luis Perdomo (4-2, 3.34). First pitch is set for 7.05 p.m. (PT). Additional Notes
- Thursday night's loss marks the first time the River Cats have lost five straight games since the first month of last season when they dropped eight consecutive from April 15 to April 22.
- Reliever Ray Black lit up the radar gun, as he's been doing all season, posting 100 miles per hour on the board six times in a scoreless eighth inning that featured two strikeouts.
- Third baseman Ryder Jones had his season-high nine-game hit streak come to an end as he finished the contest 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. During the run, Jones batted .361 with a triple and two home runs.
