Saltdogs Outlast Canaries in 12 Innings

Lincoln, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs outlasted the Sioux Falls Canaries, 4-3, in a twelve-inning contest, which opened the three-game series between the North Division leaders on Tuesday night.

The Canaries drew first blood with a pair of runs in the third inning. David Keesee led off with a single, but was still at first base two outs later. Wil Quintana kept the inning going with a single to move Keesee to second. Abner Arroyo came to the plate and smoked a ground ball to the right side. Arroyo's grounder was stopped on a dive by Saltdogs first baseman Brett Cooley, but Cooley was unable to make a play and the Birds ended up with the bases loaded. Ben Van Iderstine came through with a bases loaded double to score Keesee and Quintana. The runs put the Canaries ahead, 2-0.

The Saltdogs tied the game in the sixth inning. Pichi Balet got on base when Canaries starter Jeff Landing hit him with a pitch. Designated hitter Bryan Warner followed with his fourth homer of the season to tie the game, 2-2.

Lincoln took the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Seth Pietsch led the inning off with a double and, after Jay Yaconetti walked, Pietsch advanced to third on a fielder's choice. Pietsch came into score on a wild pitch, giving the Saltdogs a 3-2 lead.

The Birds bounced right back to tie the game in the eighth. Matt Imwalle led the inning off with a double and came around to score on a single by David Keesee. Imwalle's run tied the game, 3-3.

The game remained tied until the 12th inning. Saltdogs catcher Aaron Mendoza led off the bottom of the 12th with a single, and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Carlos Gallardo. A wild pitch send Mendoza to third, and Tony Garcia singled to bring Mendoza home for the Saltdogs 4-3 win.

Sean Donlin (2-1) suffered the loss for the Canaries. Joe Brown (1-0) pitched two scorless innings to pick up his first win for the Saltdogs.

The Canaries and Saltdogs will continue their three-game series on Wednesday night at Haymarket Park in Lincoln, NE. Kevin Cheppenko will take the mound for the Canaries against Josh Kauten for the Saltdogs.

The Birds return home on Friday night to host the El Paso Diablos in the first game of a three-game series. Friday night's game will feature a post-game fireworks display presented by Schoeneman's Lumber.
