St.Joe Wins in Extra Innings, 7-6

The El Paso Diablos rallied from a 6-0 deficit, but came up short in extras, 7-6 against St. Jose at Phil Welch Stadium on Tuesday night.

The St. Joe Black Snakes erupted in the bottom of the second inning for four runs off of Andy Torres. St. Joe picked up five base hits in the frame, and capitalized on RBI doubles from Dustin Yount and Casey Gordon as they took a 4-0 lead into the top of the third.

St. Joe took a commanding 6-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Dustin Yount blasted a two run home-run to deep right field giving the Blacksnakes the advantage.

Brian Buchanan set down twelve straight Diablos from the first inning into the fifth. He had six strikeouts in that span.

Andy Torres settle down after giving up the homerun to Yount. Torres retired 11 straight St. Joe Blacksnakes into the bottom of the sixth.

The Diablos finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Kory Drew led off the frame with his second double of the night to deep left. Jorge Alvarez walked the next at-bat putting two runners aboard. Drew was eventually plated on a Walter Olmstead sac-fly and Matt Kent drove in Alvarez with an RBI single to cut the lead to 6-2.

El Paso tied up the contest in the top of the seventh inning. El Paso plated four runners on five base hits, forcing St. Joe to use three different pitchers. Juan Camacho had a big RBI double in the frame and pinch runner Joel Izqueirdo scored the tieing run on a Walter Olmstead infield single.

The Diablos had a chance to take the lead in the top of the tenth. Evan Conley led off the inning with a walk. Jordan Belcher and Albenis Machado then had back to back bunt singles loading the bases. Closer Tim Vasquez settled down retiring the next three Diablos to end the best chance of the night for El Paso.

St. Joseph would win the game in the bottom of the eleventh. Eric Padilla led off the inning with a sizzling groundball to the short stop which Albenis Machado misplayed for the error. Casey Gordon then laid down a bunt which third baseman Evan Conley fielded and he threw out Eric Padilla at second. Casey Gordon a few pitches later attempted a steal of second and catcher Matt Kent's throw sailed into center field which allowed Gordon to move over to third base. Curt Meoso drove in Gordon with the winning run on a sacrifice fly to right field.

Andy Torres threw seven innings allowing six runs off of 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Garvis Romero (0-2) threw three and a third innings allowing no earned runs off of one hit with no walks and four strikeouts.

Brian Buchanan threw six and two thirds allowing four earned runs off of seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Vinny DeCristafaro (2-5) gets the win as he threw a scoreless 11th.

The Diablos will take on St. Joe in game two of the series on Wednesday night at 6:05 PM MST from Phil Welch Stadium. Josh Neitz will toss for the Diablos. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1380 AM and www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
