Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
The Lincoln Saltdogs came up short in their final game of the Northern League/American Association Challenge, losing 8-3 to Fargo-Moorehead at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City. The loss drops the Dogs to 2-4 in exhibition play, with one more preseason game to go.
The Saltdogs made one early comeback, scoring twice in the third to tie the game at 2, but were otherwise unable to come up with clutch base hits. Eduardo Rios and Dustin Yount each had RBI singles in the third inning, but the Dogs left two runners on base in three of the first five innings, squandering their chances to put several more runs on the board. Fargo then held Lincoln to just two baserunners over the final four innings. Ben Tinius drove in the game's final run with an RBI groundout in the 9th.
Lincoln starter Josh Kauten labored through 2 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits, two of which were home runs. Kauten also struck out two, walked three and hit a batter before departing with the bases loaded and two out in the third. The Saltdogs escaped further damage when R.D. Spiehs came on in relief to retire the final batter of the inning. Spiehs went on to post another strong outing, giving up just two hits and a walk over 3 2/3 innings.
Fargo catcher David Castillo hit a two-out, two-run homer in the second inning for the game's first runs. After Lincoln tied it in the top of the third, the Hawks' Steve Mortimer hit a monster shot all the way up the berm beyond the right-centerfield fence for a solo homer. The blast gave Fargo the lead for good, and the Redhawks tacked on five more runs in the 8th to put the game away.
The Saltdogs head next to Shreveport, where they'll take on the Sports in their final exhibition game of 2008 on Tuesday night at 7:05pm.
The Saltdogs begin the 2008 season on May 8 at Pensacola, with the home opener set for May 16 against the Pelicans. For team and ticket information, go to www.saltdogs.com.
