Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs added a pair of young players to the roster on Thursday, signing outfielder Justin Jacobs and pitcher Ryan Miller. Both players saw action in the Class A South Atlantic League the past two seasons.
Jacobs has four seasons of professional experience, but will be just 21 years old when the 2010 season begins. He was picked out of high school in the sixth round of the 2006 draft by the Florida Marlins, and made his pro debut that year at the age of 17. He played mostly third base in '06, but moved to the outfield in 2007, and spent the next three seasons playing all three outfield spots. Justin spent all of 2008 and 2009 with Greensboro in the South Atlantic League.
Miller was also taken in the 2006 draft, as the Cleveland Indians picked him out of junior college in the 36th round. The lefty made his pro debut in 2007, working mainly as a starter in his first two seasons. Ryan made more relief appearances than starts in 2009, though, and injuries limited him to just 18 games and 34.1 innings pitched. Miller also spent all of 2008 and part of 2009 in the South Atlantic League, pitching for Lake County, although he also made eight appearances in '09 for Kinston in the high-Class A Carolina League.
"Justin and Ryan are a couple of good examples of players who could thrive in this league," said Saltdogs manager Marty Scott. "They're both young players who still have their best baseball ahead of them, and they're looking for a chance to impress the scouts and work their way back into affiliated ball. I can't wait to get a look at what they can do for us in spring training."
The Saltdogs now have 26 players on their roster. American Association teams may carry as many as 27 players into spring training, and must cut down to 23 players by Opening Day. After two weeks, the rosters must be cut to 22 players for the remainder of the season.
Season Ten of Saltdogs Baseball begins on May 13 in Sioux Falls, with the home opener scheduled for May 25 against Wichita. For more team and ticket information, go to www.saltdogs.com .
