Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pensacola Pelicans announced today the signing of left handed pitcher Tommy Baumgardner and right handed pitcher Jason Jones to contracts for the 2010 season.

Baumgardner, from Lakeland, FL, has spent the last four seasons with the Colorado Rockies organization, being drafted in the 28th round in 2006. In 2009, with the double-A Tulsa Drillers, he posted a 2.81 ERA in 57.2 innings pitched, with 41 strikeouts. His career numbers include a record of 8-7, with a 2.77 ERA, 20 saves, 167 strikeouts verses only 61 walks, in 198.1 innings pitched. Baumgardner held opposing batters to a .248 batting average. Prior to his professional career, Baumgardner was part of the Southeastern Conference Ole Miss baseball team, helping them to a 10th place finish in the College World Series.

"We are fortunate to get such an experienced LHP in the bullpen," said Pelicans Field Manager Talmadge Nunnari. "He will have a vital role in securing the lead for 1-2 innings and set up our closer, Ron Hill."

Jason Jones was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 4th round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft in 2004. He spent six seasons in the Yankees organization, playing at all levels. In 2009, he was with the Rochester Red Wings, triple-A affiliate for the Minnesota Twins. His standout season to date came in 2008, where he split time between double-A and triple-A. With a record of 13-8, Jones posted an ERA of 3.26, and struck out 102 batters, while walking only 50, in 160 innings pitched. He has a career total of 455 strikeouts and 181 walks.

Nunnari commented on the addition of Jones to the roster: "With Jason's experience in the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins farm system, he will solidify the top of the rotation for us. Another added bonus Jason provides is the knowledge and work ethic that it takes to pitch with success at such a high level."
