Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, tried to get out of the dog house in the first game of the three-game series versus Long Beach at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. In front of 3396 fans, the Salmon Kings returned from a two-goal deficit, but Long Beach leashed in the 5-4 victory.

Victoria came out in the first period to take a 2-0 lead before the halfway mark. At 7:31 into the first, Defenseman Seamus Young tallied his fifth goal of the season, finishing a cross crease pass from F.P. Guenette. Two minutes later, Jordan Krestanovich scored his first goal with the Salmon Kings, as Gustav Engman capitalized on a Long Beach turnover and fed the puck to Ryan Wade, who spotted Krestanovich with a cross slot pass.

The Ice Dogs answered in the back half of the first period, and tied the game 2-2 before intermission. In a 5-on-3 powerplay, Brad Bonello hauled in a rebound and passed to Jeff Mason who buried the puck from the right circle. Just after the ensuing 5-on-4 powerplay expired, and with 4:22 remianing in the first, Brandon Schwartz earned his sixth goal of the season with a slapshot from the edge of the right circle past Goaltender Bryan Bridges.

Long Beach added two more consecutive goals in the second period to take a 4-2 lead. Bonello dug the puck from the corner and sliced to the slot to beat Bridges for the Ice Dogs' second powerplay goal. Schwartz notched his second goal of the game at 8:56 into the second, tapping in a feed from Terry Harrison in a 2-on-1 drive.

With 4:35 remaining in the second stanza, Defenseman James Demone posted his second goal of the season by tapping in his own rebound past sprawling Netminder Mike Brown.

The Salmon Kings had climbed within one heading into the final period. Slightly over the halfway mark of the third, Adam Edinger capitalized off a Victoria turnover in their zone, and earned his first goal of the season. With 2:05 left in the game, newcomer Jordan Krestanovich brought the Salmon Kings back within one, and fired a shot from the left slot under the pad of Brown for his second goal of the game.

Victoria pulled Bridges in the final minutes for the man advantage, but the Ice Dogs froze their lead and hung on for the win.

Final score: 5-4 Ice Dogs

Brown posted his fourth win of the season, and Bridges swallowed his fourth loss. Victoria went 0 for 5 on the powerplay, and Long Beach popped in two goals out of eight opportunities with the man advantage. The Ice Dogs outshot the Salmon Kings 40-36.
