SALEM, VA - A night after Winston-Salem claimed a pair of wins over the Avalanche, Salem returned the favor sweeping the Warthogs in a doubleheader on Saturday night at Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field. The Avalanche used a stellar start from Douglas Argullo to blank the Warthogs 4-0 in the opener and outslugged Winston-Salem to garner a 9-7 win in the nightcap.

Arguello (2-2) sparkled in the opener tossing a complete game shutout. The southpaw limited the Warthogs to two hits with five strikeouts to earn the win. In his two starts against Winston-Salem this season, Arguello has worked 13 shutout innings while holding the Warthogs to just four hits with 12 strikeouts.

Salem received all the offense they would need when Travis Sweet lifted an RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth inning that scored Jimmy Van Ostrand. The Avalanche added three more runs in the sixth inning as four consecutive one-out hits, including RBI from Jhon Florentino, Mark Ori and Van Ostrand, gave Salem a 4-0 lead.

Warthogs starting pitcher Matt Long, who did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, took the loss after surrendering four runs on six hits while tossing his first complete game of the season.

In the nightcap, the Warthogs jumped ahead early with four runs in the second inning. C.J. Retherford reached on an error, Anderson Gomes singled and Francisco Hernandez walked to load the bases. C.J. Lang laced a two-run double and Paulo Orlando and Salvador Sanchez added RBI to give the Warthogs a 4-0 lead.

Salem trimmed Winston-Salem's lead to one with three runs in the second inning against an ineffective Jacob Rasner. The big hit coming off the bat of Jordan Parazz, who smacked a two-run single to trim the deficit to 4-3. After Retherford crushed a solo home run in the top of the third, Salem answered right back with two runs off Winston-Salem reliever Ricky Brooks to knot the game at five.

The Avalanche took advantage of errors by Warthogs third baseman Retherford on back-to-back plays in the fifth inning to grab their first lead of the game at 9-6.

An Orlando solo home run in the sixth inning trimmed Salem's lead to 9-7, but it was as close as the Warthogs would get. Steven Spurgeon (1-1) allowed three unearned runs in two innings out of the bullpen to take the loss for the Warthogs. Rasner, who was making his first start since May 7 because of a strained groin, only last two innings and allowed three runs on three hits with four walks.

Salem reliever Chris Salamida (4-0) tossed two innings of relief to collect the win. Sergio Severino, who was making his Carolina League debut, got roughed up for six runs on seven hits in just three innings of work, but did not factor in the decision.

These two clubs will conclude their five-game weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field. The Warthogs will send RHP John Ely (1-6, 4.18) to the mound, while the Avalanche will hand the ball to RHP Corey Bass (2-4, 4.50). The first pitch is scheduled for 2:07 p.m.
