Potomac Nationals News Release

WOODBRIDGE, Va.- The Potomac Nationals announced today that right-handed pitcher Luis Atilano has been called up from Low-A Hagerstown and placed on Potomac's 25-man roster, replacing Terrence Engles who was sent to the Suns.

Atilano made seven appearances for Hagerstown this season sporting a 3.16 ERA while converting one save and making three starts. The Puerto Rican native struck out 13 batters in 25 2/3 innings and held opposing hitters to a .276 average against him.

Originally selected in the first round by the Atlanta Braves in 2003, Atilano was acquired in a trade for first baseman Daryle Ward on August 31, 2006. The 23-year-old spent the majority of the 2007 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, and he appeared in just one game for the GCL Nationals working a scoreless 1 1/3 innings.

This is Atilano's second stint in the Carolina League. His first came with Myrtle Beach in 2006, where he started 18 games for the Pelicans going 6-7 with a 4.50 ERA.

In 2005, the right-hander played in the South Atlantic League All-Star game and was also named the Rome Braves pitcher of the month for May. He has pitched in 69 career minor league games owning a 22-19 record and 4.24 ERA with 191 strikeouts and just 77 walks.

In five starts with Potomac this season, Engles went 0-5 with a 9.47 ERA while striking out 22 batters in 19 innings pitched. The right-hander's best start with the P-Nats came on May 13th when he tossed six innings and allowed just one run on three hits.

The Staten Island, N.Y., native returns to the Suns where prior to joining Potomac he owned a 3-0 record with a 1.89 ERA. The 22-year-old was named Hagerstown's Pitcher of the Month in April by the Washington Nationals.

With the addition of Atilano, Potomac's active roster now stands at 25, with 13 pitchers and 12 position players.
