Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans survived a late charge by the Frederick Keys to take game two and secure the series win by a final of 7-6 in front of 3,349 fans. The Pelicans have won nine of their last ten games to trim their magic number for a first half championship to nine.

The Pelicans opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. Keys starter Jake Arrieta walked the bases loaded to bring up Jon Mark Owings with nobody out. Owings proceeded to hit an RBI single through the left side of the infield that scored both Tyler Flowers and Phillip Britton. Owings was only credited for one RBI as Paul Winterling misplayed the ball in left field allowing the second runner to come into score.

The Keys squared the score at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. Matt Wieters led off with a walk, which was followed by back-to-back singles from Brandon Snyder and Brandon Tripp to load the bases. A slow bounce out by Billy Rowell allowed Wieters to score. Pelicans starter Kyle Cofield followed with two straight walks that forced home Snyder.

As they have done quite often over the last two weeks, the Pelicans exploded for a bevy of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jon Mark Owings led off with a single. Travis Jones followed by drawing the seventh walk issued by Arrieta. After Hicks flew out, Willie Cabrera hit a soft liner into center field that scored Owings to give the Pelicans a 3-2 edge. Ernesto Mejia then clobbered his eighth home run of the season off the video-board in left-center field to vault the Pelicans in front 6-2.

The Keys scored one run in the seventh to cut the deficit to 6-3. Then in the eighth inning, Pelicans reliable closer Bryan Dumesnil gave up a three-run home run into Land Shark Landing to tie the score at 6-6.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Pelicans received a huge boost from Phillip Britton, who led off with a double to left field. After a perfect sacrifice bunt by Concepcion Rodriguez that moved Britton to third, Jon Mark Owings hit a sacrifice fly to left-center field to score what turned out to be the game-winning run.

Dumesnil proved mentally tough in the ninth, as he rebounded to retire the dangerous middle of the Keys batting order to earn his second win of the season.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Both Cofield and Arrieta pitched well considering they were plagued by a tight yet consistent strike zone. Ryan Ouellette was saddled with his fifth loss of the season.

The Pelicans play game three of the series against the Frederick Keys on Sunday, June 1st at 6:05 p.m. The Pelicans will send RHP Ryne Reynoso (4-3, 3.35) to the mound, while the Keys will counter with RHP Tim Bascom (1-1, 4.35).
