Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Salem, VA - Despite striking out nine of the first ten batters he faced, Cory Rasmus took the loss in a 4-0 affair in Salem Tuesday night.

The Hillcats looked like they would get on the board early as Shortstop Andrelton Simmons led off the game with a double in the top of the first. Phil Gosselin sacrificed Simmons over to third, but with one out, Todd Cunningham struck out leaving Simmons at third base. Clean-up hitter Adam Milligan struck out behind Cunningham stranding Simmons.

Lynchburg had their lead off man on base again in the second but could not push him across. Third baseman, Joe Leonard, singled and reached third with two outs. This time it was nine-hitter, L.V. Ware, who struck out with runners at the cornera and two outs, and the Hillcats walked away empty handed again in the second.

Meanwhile, Hillcats' starting pitcher, Cory Rasmus, looked lights out on the mound. He struck out the first eight batters he faced and nine of the first ten. However, he walked batter 11 and gave up an RBI triple two batters later to Reynaldo Rodriguez. Rodriguez would come around to score on a wild pitch making it 2-0 Salem after four innings.

Two more runs came in for Salem in the fifth. Shortstop Derrik Gibson went deep off of Rasmus for a two-run home run. It was 4-0 Red Sox after five and that's how it would remain.

The Hillcats left seven runners on as they were shut out for the first time in 2011.

Chris Balcom-Miller (1-0) earned the win tossing five shut out innings. Rasmus (0-1) suffered the loss giving up four runs in 4.1 innings pitched.

Salem improved to 2-1 on the season, while Lynchburg fell to 1-2 and out of a tie for first place in the Northern Division.

Tomorrow will be right-hander Willie Kempf for the Hillcats against righty Ryan Pressly for the Red Sox. First pitch will be at 7:05 pm. The pre-game show will go on the air at 6:40 pm.
