Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Kinston, NC - A laborious Tuesday night of hits and errors went Wilmington's way as an unearned score in the ninth tipped the scales to the visiting Blue Rocks (3-2) over the Kinston Indians (1-4), 7-6. Nick Francis reached on a Casey Frawley error and scored on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Tim Ferguson for the go-ahead run. Ryan Dennick (1-0) made sure the lead held up with 2.2 innings of scoreless two-hit ball to garner the win.
Crooked numbers littered the scoreboard as the teams combined for 23 hits and five miscues. Wilmington grabbed a first-inning lead on a Francis RBI single. Kinston countered with a two-run homer from Adam Abraham in the second inning, his second blast of the series. John Whittleman tied the game with a run-scoring single the next inning that chased prospect starter T.J. House after 2.2 frames of work.
Bo Greenwell left the yard with a two-run shot to right in the bottom of the third for a 5-2 Kinston lead that held up until the seventh. All nine men in the Wilmington order batted and combined for four runs in that inning. All of the run scoring came in three successive two-out at-bats: a two-run double by Francis, an RBI triple from Whittleman and an RBI single by Ferguson. The entirety of the damage hit the line of reliever Jose Flores, who struck out the side in the four-hit frame.
Kinston took Flores off the hook when Rey Navarro's second error of the game, a missed catch while covering at first base on a Tyler Holt bunt, allowed Justin Toole to score for a 6-6 deadlock in the bottom of the seventh.
Then came the ninth. Francis reached on a throwing error by Frawley at shortstop and advanced to third on a single to right by Whittleman. The miscue proved pivotal as Ferguson's groundout would have ended the inning. Instead, Francis scored and the Blue Rocks grabbed a 7-6 lead.
Dennick had two men reach base including a two-out double by Frawley to put the tying tally in scoring position. But the southpaw ended his outing as he began it, by striking out Chase Burnette to secure the win.
The three-game set concludes Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. The Opening Day starters for both clubs make their second starts of the season. Wilmington's Tim Melville (0-1, 6.75) will oppose Kinston ace Drew Pomeranz (0-0, 0.00). Broadcast coverage will begin at 10:30 a.m. as studio host Adam Dobrowolski brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
