Salem-Keizer Uses Five-Run Fifth to Claim Series

EUGENE, Ore. - After collecting their first series win of the 2014 season with a walk-off win against Everett on Wednesday, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes couldn't have started their eight-game, two-country road trip on a better note.
Ethan Miller limited the Eugene Emeralds to just two runs through six innings and the Volcanoes scored five runs in the top of the fifth, as Salem-Keizer cruised to their seventh win of the season in the 5-2 victory at PK Park.
After failing to score a run in their game against Tri-City last night, the Emeralds got to work offensively in the top half of the first.
Trea Turner, the 13th overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft, singled to left field on a 0-2 pitch and stole second base. He moved to third on a wild pitch and eventually scored on a balk despite Miller striking out the side.
That was nearly all that the Eugene offense was able to muster off of Miller. The second year pro out of San Diego State retired 14 of the final 18 hitters he faced, surrendering just two hits and one run.
He tossed six complete innings, allowing two runs and striking out five to earn his first win of the season.
After starting the game scoreless through four innings, the Volcanoes' offense erupted in the fifth inning.
With one out, Jonathan Jones snuck a double just inside the left field line. He scored on a double to right by Brett Kay, tying the game at one run apiece.
With two outs in the inning, the Volcanoes grabbed a commanding lead on four consecutive singles. Arroyo drove in Kay with a line drive to right field and moved to third on a single by Ryan Jones.
Massoni extended the lead to 3-1 on a single to left field, before he and Jones scored on an infield single by Shilo McCall and a throwing error by Turner.
For Salem-Keizer, the six hits notched in the five-run fifth inning marked a season high.
Eugene cut into the lead with a run in the bottom half in the fifth, after a Michael Miller single scored Chase Jensen to make it 5-2.
That was as close as the Emeralds would get, however, as Raymundo Montero slammed the door in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Entering the game hitless in his last 14 at bats, Arroyo finished 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Ryan Jones, Massoni and Jonathan Jones also had two hits apiece for the Volcanoes.
Up next: The Volcanoes will look to tie a season-high with a third straight win as they take on the Eugene Emeralds in game two of the three-game series. Jason Forjet will make his third start on the mound for Salem-Keizer. He is 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA and pitched five scoreless innings against Everett his last time out.
