Hillsboro Hops News Release
TONIGHT: The Hops and the Mariners' affiliate, the Everett Aquasox, meet in the second game of a five-game set at Ron Tonkin Field in Hillsboro.
YESTERDAY: Hops C Tyler Baker clubbed a game-winning double in the bottom of the 10th, which caromed off the glove of Everett RF Wilton Martinez as he raced back toward the warning track. Baker's two-bagger scored 1B George Roberts, who had preceded Baker with a one-out double to left-center. RHP Cody Geyer worked two scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one walk, to earn the win.
THESE GO TO ELEVEN: The Hops are now 11-6. In 2013, Hillsboro won 11 games the entire first half (against 27 losses).
WELCOME BACK, part one: The Hops yesterday welcomed back popular infielder George Roberts, who spent the majority of 2013 in Hillsboro. Roberts went 3-for-5 yesterday and started the game-winning rally with a 10th-inning double. He had been with Class A South Bend in the MWL.
WELCOME BACK, part deux: Also back with the Hops is RHP Austin Platt, who was arguably Hillsboro's best pitcher in 2013. He's expected to start tonight's game against Everett. See notes on Platt on the next page.
IT HAPPENS QUICKLY: The short-season NWL seems even shorter because of the split-season format instituted in 2010. There are just 20 games remaining in the first half. First- half-champions will be declared in each division after the games of July 21st. At the end of the season, each first-half champ will meet their division's second-half champ in the first round of the playoffs.
Hillsboro has a three-game lead over Salem- Keizer entering play today, with Eugene 3 1/2 out and Boise four out. Of the 20 remaining games in the first half, the Hops will play 12 against their division rivals-six against Salem-Keizer, three against Boise and three against Eugene. Ten of those 12 will be on the road (and the Hops have won 16 of their last 18 road games dating back to 2013).
ALL-TIME VS. EVERETT: The Hops are 8-8 all-time vs. the Aquasox, 5-1 in 2014. Hillsboro took four of five in this year's season- opening series at Everett, winning the final 4 games.
Last year, the Hops went 3-7. Hillsboro lost four of five in Everett from June 21-24, 2013, despite out- scoring the Sox during the series. Everett took three of five at Ron Tonkin Field from July 26-30, 2013.
The Sox won the final three games of that series by an identical 6-0 score.
DAYTIME FREE-BALLIN': The Hops have played nine home day games their season-plus of existence. Five of the nine have gone extra innings, and the Hops are 5-0 in those games.
Last year, the Hops had beat Vancouver in 19 inn, Spokane in 13 inn, Everett in 11 inn and Boise in 10 inn (dates and scores on last page of these notes).
Overall, the Hops are 8-3 in extra inn. in 2013-14, 6-0 at home.) Yes, 5 of 9 DAY home games have gone extra innings, and just 1 of 38 NIGHT home games have gone extras.
A STAR-STUDDED STAFF: See details later in these notes regarding manager J.R. House, pitching coach Doug Drabek, hitting coach Mark Grace and special consultant Ben Petrick.
ON THE AIR: Hops games can be heard live on Rip City Radio 620 AM in Portland, and online at www.foxsportsradio620.com. Mobile listeners should download the iHeartRadio app. Tonight's game begins at 7:05, with pregame at 6:35. Rich Burk (@RichBurk1) and Matt Richert (who still won't join the Twitter revolution) will call the action.
