Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes were victorious against the visiting Hillsboro Hops on Thursday, August 18, by a score of 12-7. The two clubs went back-and-forth all night in a game that featured five lead changes.
The Volcanoes took the lead for good, and then some, in the bottom of the seventh inning. A one-out single by right fielder Julio Pena followed by a walk by third baseman Manuel Geraldo set up shortstop Ryan Howard, who hit a two RBI double to left field. This tied the score at seven apiece.
They would take the lead in the next at-bat on an infield base hit by center fielder Bryan Reynolds that was cut off by Hops second baseman Manny Jefferson, but was thrown too high for first baseman Justin Chigbogu. Howard scored from second on the throwing error.
Reynolds would then score two batters later after Chigbogu was unable to handle a grounder off the bat of first baseman Ryan Kirby. Designated hitter Leo Rojas followed, breaking the game open with a two-RBI double down the left field line.
When the dust settled, the Volcanoes scored six runs on seven hits in the seventh inning alone.
Left fielder Gio Brusa led the Volcanoes offense, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, including a two-run homerun in the third inning that gave the Volcanoes a 4-3 lead. Rojas, Wednesday night's hero after hitting a walk-off grand slam, continued his hot streak, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run.
Starter Melvin Adon gave up three earned runs on seven hits and six strikeouts across five innings pitched. All earned runs came on a three-run homerun by Hops' right fielder Jason Morozowski.
Hops starter Tyler Mark, the #26 ranked prospect in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, was tagged with the no-decision in his fifth start of the season against Salem-Keizer.
Matt Pope picked up the win in relief for Salem-Keizer. Jake Winston took the loss for the Hops.
With the win, the Volcanoes have won the series against the Hops, and will go for the series sweep Friday night. Salem-Keizer will be hosting area emergency responders on their Hometown Heroes night, as well as the world's most flexible man, RubberBoy. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Volcanoes Stadium.
