Mississippi Braves News Release

PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves have announced their Farm Bureau Player & Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Sunday, July 15th. Mississippi Braves utility infielder, Alejandro Salazar and right-handed pitcher, Chad Sobotka have been selected for the weekly awards.

Salazar, the 21-year old utility infielder, takes home Mississippi Farm Bureau Player of the Week honors for the first time this season after finishing the week with a .364 AVG (8-for-22) accompanied by 4 R, 1 2B, 4 RBI and 2 BB along with a .400 OBP, a .409 SLG and a .809 OPS in seven games played. After going 5-for-5 with a 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI and a BB in Sunday night's contest against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, Salazar becomes the first M-Braves player to record a five-hit game this season. The last M-Braves player that recorded a five-hit game was Keith Curcio (April 9, 2017 vs. Jacksonville.) For Salazar, his five-hit game on July 15th was the first of his career and a personal career high for the amount of hits recorded in a single game.

On the season, Salazar currently boasts a slash line of .306/.333/.389. In 12 total games played with the Mississippi Braves in 2018, Salazar has racked up 6 R, 11 H, 3 2B, 7 RBI, 14 TB, 2 BB and 1 SB. A native of Maracaibo, Venezuela, Salazar was signed by the Atlanta Braves on July 2, 2013 as a non-drafted free agent.

Sobotka, the 25-year old right-handed pitcher, made two relief appearances over the course of the week (July 10th at Birmingham and July 14th against Pensacola) posting a 1-0 record and a 0.00 ERA. In his two appearances combined, Sobotka tossed a total of 3.0 shutout innings of baseball without allowing a hit or issuing a walk. The right-hander also tallied five strikeouts. Sobotka was credited with his fourth save of the season after his July 10th appearance against Birmingham and he earned his second win of the season after his outing on July 14th against the league leading, Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Sobotka's four saves are a team best among all current M-Braves pitchers.

For the season, Sobotka has posted a 2.08 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. Over the span of 20 relief appearances with the M-Braves in 2018, Sobotka has allowed 16 H, 9 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, has issued 12 BB and struck out 35 in 26.0 IP. The Sarasota, Florida native was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the fourth round (133rd overall) of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of South Carolina Upstate (Spartanburg, South Carolina.)

The Mississippi Braves are the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Since the inaugural 2005 season, over 125 M-Braves have gone on to Major League Baseball. The M-Braves have made postseason play four times and went on to win the Southern League Championship in 2008. Stop by Trustmark Park or call 888-BRAVES4 Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
